Is it a good idea to have free giveaways on my website?

My friend, who works in an SEO often guides me on the secrets of a better marketing strategy. I have had some benefits but I am not too sure how to take his next idea. I started publishing about free giveaway contest on my website in the last week which attracted the attention of many links. He said it would be a great way to attract more links and attention to the website. However, while I was surfing recently, I came across a post which warned against sharing links with blogs offering giveaway contests. Is this true? Do I need to de-link my posts ? How do I prevent this problem?
